to finish is good

I graduated last week. It was fantastic. Before the graduation I was depressed about the whole experience, thinking what a waste of time it had been (in terms of bettering myself financially, and getting on with a career) but the day was cool. A friend and I had made a pact to go to the ceremony together, because we’d both found it so hard to get through, and another friend came and took photos of us, and my Mum came, and we all went out for yum cha afterwards. So it was good in that I realised that I’d a) made very good friends through doing the degree, and b) I’d actually finished something, besides all of the academic things like learning to focus, and think critically, and discuss etc etc etc
So yes, it’s a good thing to finish a degree.

Yum Cha is little dishes of Chinese food for morning tea, or brunch, or lunch. You go to a Chinese restaurant and waitresses bring around trolleys laden with bamboo baskets, or dishes, some with steamed dumplings, some with sticky rice, some with deep fried dumplings, or rice noodle rolls. There are also trolleys for steamed bok choy, or fried things. You choose what you'd like from off the trolleys and you get charged per dish. It's very cool. I think it might be a Cantonese thing, I've only ever had Yum Cha in Sydney, but apparently you can have it in Hong Kong, and maybe in Malaysia.

Here in London yum cha is called 'dim sum'. Why did we never take you to dim sum down the road? Probably because it tends to be a bit meaty and we haven't found anything like Bhodi's. Whatever - well done on the degree, Lynn. B and I think you should now move to Spain and start a web design company.

Yes indeedy, congratulations Lynn!
Nice to hear that you enjoyed your graduation day.

Yum Cha means Drink Tea. I like that the name suggests that the tea drinking is the most important thing, and the food is secondary. But of course, the food is so yummy that the tea gets side-lined. I think you're right about it being Cantonese.

Dim Sum means 'heart's delight': amuses bouches, rather than hors d'oevres,

Yes, congrats to you, it's a really long haul, phew. Tests your staying power, doesn't it?
